Where to Now?
Once you've decided to make the change, you need to devise an ISDN game plan. The following should get you started.
1) Ask NTT if your telephone line is suitable for ISDN
Call your local NTT office, pay them a visit, or dial 116, use NTT's Automated Japanese Service Guide to obtain an application form via faxback, or call NTT's Freedial Information Service in English on 0120-364463. In April 1997, NTT claimed that 96% of its telephone lines could be converted to ISDN without a number change and estimated that by December 1997 the figure would be 100%.
2) Check whether your ISP offers dial-up ISDN
Synchronous 64 kbps (INS64) is the minimum (128 kbps is better).
3) Decide who does what?
Before applying to NTT, decide whether you're going to do the installation yourself or leave it all up to NTT. If you intend to buy a TA/DSU and do the hookup yourself, buy before applying to NTT. A good TA/DSU owner's manual will explain how to hookup and configure your ISDN system and fill in NTT's applications form. Note that if you plan to install ISDN telephones and G4 fax equipment, NTT have to do the hookup.
4) Complete and submit the application forms
If all seems to be in order, NTT will let you know the installation day.
As an alternative, apply to Bricks Corporation.
